It's actually Keir Starmer but I brilliantly re worked it so as to address the Jersey Election. For those of you who followed it you will be aware that the good people of St Clement saw through my charm, good looks and eloquence and voted elsewhere! The strange thing is after an election everyone wants to ask your views (well not everyone but a lot of people) so here we go. Firstly as far as my good self is concerned one of the things people ask is "are you very disappointed?" I'd like to tell you that I am but the truthful answer is not really as I gave it my best and proved I could still hack it whereas in 2022 I was gutted as I felt we had a real chance to bring change and stability then and it was missed .I am delighted though that so many of the architects of Alliance and it's ethos have been successful this time with the election of former leader Sir Mark Boleat as senator and also the success of Value Jersey. Sadly that change from the voting public is too late to avoid the massive losses incurred by the last Assembly but they can hopefully help to avoid the same mistakes occurring again. There were several surprises with Sam Mezec missing out and Raimondo the boy wonder being elected in St Brelade . Personally and despite me being viewed as an opponent of Reform's I was sad to see Sam go as I think he added much needed balance to the assembly . One thing it did show was as the late Len Norman told me "you can't win it at the hustings”, I know that from my own experience but also because a friend of mine in London sat down and watched the senatorial hustings he was scathing at the standard of speaking and that so few spoke without notes .He picked out Mark Boleat, Serena Kirsten, Alan Maclean as good but thought Sam Mezec was very polished. Neutral views are not often seen in Jersey so it was fascinating. If Raimondo was the "boy wonder" then there is little doubt that Rowland Huelin was "Batman" from Wayne manor in St Peters as he re invented Alliance throwingthe voters a lavish Party that was not a Party and even though he refused to say where he purchased the claret, it impressed suitably to persuade people round to his way of thinking. Of course we have had political Svengali’s before such as Frank Walker and the Master of Maupertuis Terry Le Main but with the greatest of respect they are ageing now and anyway have never enjoyed the success of the new kid on the block Huelin with his Barbour cape and mask coupled with Huelin's Heroes or Value Jersey to give them their more formal title who enjoyed a great night. On the negative side it was disappointing to see Kate Wright suggest that because we have now got more women States Members that we'll hopefully see a better government as women manage in a different way. Firstly I have seen "The Devil wears Prada" and not sure that management style is great. I also find it a massive generalisation and rather insulting to women as Mrs Thatcher would have a very different style to the latest Green MP Hannah Spencer IF a similar comment had been made about men making better managers all hell would break loose and rightly so BUT most importantly it's also a load of old rubbish as in Jersey many of the top jobs recently have been held by women ...Kristina Moore, Susie Pinel, Judy Martin, Lindsey Feltham, Mary Le Hegaret ,Karen Wilson , Elaine Miller, Caroline Labey ,Helen Miles etc with varying degrees of success . We really do need to move away from this segregation of people into groups , as an old Millwall mate of mine said “I never judge people on whether they are black, white, Asian, male or female I just judge them on how big a **** they are “ Let me close with some advice to States Members and an example to follow which I highly doubt they will. In some quarters there is much rejoicing at the downfall of Sam Mezec but even his worst critics will admit that he never did things to merely appear popular, he did things because he felt (often wrongly in my view!) they were the right things to do for the Island, many States Members have not done that over the years for whatever reason. There is a quote attributed to Sir Winston Churchill that is very apt here “You have enemies? Good that means you’ve stood up for something, sometime in your life”
